From recordings of 80 sites along the Danube -from its sources in the Schwarzwald to the
delta at the Black Sea -I have made a Sound Map of the river, a continuously-running aural
tracing of it. I recorded at both the river's surface and underwater, via hydrophone, to
capture a wide array of water and other sounds from the river environment. Mixed into these are the voices of those I interviewed in their native language: fisherman, artists, a river pilot, a shipping agent a delta guide and others. Their spoken words interleave with the environmental sounds to form a surround-sound listening experience.
Visitors may reference a booklet of tl1e interviews, translated into English and German, is near the map. Stones collected from the riverbed along the route are arranged beneath the map and may be handled to get some tactile sense of the river' geological nature.
The map shows the sites, the time of day and date of each recording -thus indicating seasonal changes -and also the time within the duration of the work at which each site can be heard.
